Q. Do I need to prime before I paint?

A: This question largely depends on what surface is underneath. If you are painting already painted walls that
arent covered in oil-based paint, then you don't need to prime. Even if the colour you are painting over is very dark,
priming is not required.
Raw surfaces such as bare wood, drywall, etc. do need to be primed. Cupboards and cabinets should be primed as well.
Never prime flooring. Always apply at least 2 coats of paint to whatever project you are working on.

Q: How do I know if the surface I want to paint has been painted with oil-based paint?

A: If the paint does not come off with ordinary nail polish remover that contains acetone, then it is oil-based.

Q: What types of finishes are there?

A: There are 6 general types of finishes. They range from absolutely no shine, to very shiny.
    Flat
    Eggshell
    Pearl
    Satin
    Semi-gloss
    High-gloss

Q: Should I install hardwood flooring in my kitchen?

A: Tile or vinyl is a much better flooring for your kitchen. Hardwood is much more susceptible
dents and scratches from dropped dishes. There is also a lot of water being used in your kitchen,
and steam from your dishwasher that may cause it to warp over time.

Q: What type of tile is good to use around the bathtub or in the shower?

A: Any flooring tile will be good to use on your bathroom walls. However, wall tile cannot be installed
on the floor as it is much thinner than flooring tile.

Q: Can I install my new flooring over my existing flooring?

A: You can as long as there is only one layer of existing flooring. If there is more than one layer of
existing flooring, then you have to remove the old flooring and install a new sub-floor. You can only install
over existing flooring once.

Q: What type of carpeting should go on my stairwell?

A: Berber, or another short, tightly woven carpeting is best for stairs as it stands up to wear and tear
the best.

Q: Can I use my existing carpeting underpad or should I install a new one?

A: You should always install a new underpad when installing new carpeting. There is almost always spill
stains and odors that you won’t be able to see until you rip up the old carpeting. If you are investing
in new carpeting for your home, you should complement your new investment with a new underpad.

Q: Does the hardwood get nailed directly to the sub floor?

A: No, there is a felt or wax paper that gets put in between the hardwood and the subfloor to prevent
squeaking, and it makes for an easier installation.
